Black Friday 2011 Sets New Sales Record

Sunday, November 27th, 2011
Holiday shoppers turned out in force, kicking off a strong Black Friday, setting a new record for total retail sales on the traditional start to the holiday season.
According to ShopperTrak, the world’s largest provider of retail and mall foot-traffic counting services, Black Friday sales increased 6.6% over the same day last year. This represents $11.4 billion in retail purchases and the biggest dollar amount ever spent during the day. Retail foot-traffic rose accordingly, increasing by 5.1% over Black Friday 2010.
“Black Friday is the biggest shopping day of the year and the traditional start to the holiday shopping season,” said ShopperTrak founder Bill Martin. “Despite our sluggish economy, shoppers proved they are looking for value and ready to buy if given a good customer experience.”
“This is the largest year-over-year gain in ShopperTrak’s National Retail Sales Estimate for Black Friday since the 8.3% increase we saw between 2007 and 2006. Still, it’s just one day. It remains to be seen whether consumers will sustain this behavior through the holiday shopping season.”

Omni Dallas Opens on Time, Under Budget

Sunday, November 13th, 2011
To the delight of city officials, the new 1,001-room Omni Dallas convention center hotel opened Friday November 11 to great fanfare, on time and under its designated budget.
The city of Dallas had backed a $514 million bond sale to finance the project, so it is heartening that it could produce a return on the investment. According to the city, 273 meetings have already been booked at the hotel through 2017 and revenue is running well ahead of initial projections.
In a nod to the city’s national notoriety, actors Larry Hagman and Linda Gray from the 1980s TV series Dallas, helped cut the ribbon for the 23-story hotel.
Here is a cool time lapse of the hotel’s construction.
And here is a guided video tour of the hotel.
